“Undercoaching” refers to a concept widely used in youth sports, particularly in swimming, to describe a training approach focused on building fundamentals, fostering a love for the sport, and having a positive impact on young athletes’ character and life skills, rather than on early and intense specialization. Essentially, undercoaching emphasizes fun, long-term development, and personal growth, distinguishing itself from the more common “intensive training” (overcoaching) approach.
• Emphasis on long-term development: Instead of focusing solely on immediate results, undercoaching aims to create a lasting love for the sport.
• Life-skill development: Beyond technical abilities, the undercoaching approach focuses on developing character, leadership, and other important life skills.
• Fun and passion: It encourages young athletes to have fun, play, and experiment within their sport, nurturing a passion that can last a lifetime.
• A more relaxed approach: A more relaxed style that allows young athletes to focus on playing, not just competing.
