Team and Group in sport and business

Every point highlighted in Velasco's video can be equally important in the business. Here are the key points:

🎯 A Common Goal

Teams always share a clear objective:

  • Avoid relegation

  • Reach the playoffs

  • Win the gold medal

The goal gives meaning to everything else.

📈 Intermediate Goals

To reach the final objective, we need intermediate goals.

Every player, coach, and staff member must improve:

  • One or two specific things

  • Not ten — just a few, clearly defined

Improvement means change. And change is never easy.

🔁 The Principle of Collective Improvement

If each member of the team improves just a little,👉 the sum of small changes creates a big leap in performance.

That’s the real multiplier effect of a team.

🤝 Playing as a Team

“Playing as a team” does not mean:

  • Canceling the individual

  • Becoming all the same

The point is not to eliminate the “I.”The point is to make the “I” work inside the “We.”

🧭 Identity

Two key questions:

  • How do we want to play?

  • Who do we want to be?

A team without identity is just a group of people.

🎭 Roles

Roles are one of the main differences between a group and a team.

In a team:

  • Roles are defined

  • Roles are complementary

  • It’s important to clarify who is a starter and who is a backup

Sometimes,a player is not strong enough to startbut too strong to accept the bench —and in that case, it may be better not to have them on the team.

🧩 Collaboration

Players help each other:

  • Not because they are friends

  • But because it is part of the game

We help each other to reach the common objective.

❓ Why Are We Here?

We are not here:

  • For vacation

  • To simply spend time together

We are here to:👉 Play / Work👉 Achieve the objective

🛠️ Responsibility

Don’t talk about others.Address the situation as it is.

In a real team:

  • Blame is not the protagonist

  • The solution is the protagonist

💪 Winning with What We Have

Talking about what we lack doesn’t win games.

Teams win:👉 With their imperfections👉 With what they have

🧠 The Coach’s Responsibility

A coach must like the players he has:

  • Because they are his players

  • Not because they are the strongest on paper

Team strength begins with this mindset.
